Welcome [Oct. 14th, 2006|12:40 pm]
Found in Translation

Would you like to be part of the first Found in Translation Fic Exchange ever? Do you have experience and advice to offer? Are you a huge sucker who I can make help me run this? Well then, you've come to the right place!

Our exchange is inspired by yuletide, though we're not affiliated in any way. Because any anime available in English has at least fifty pages of eye-bleedingly terrible drabbles available on fanfiction.net, most can't make it into other rare fandom fic exchanges. Here at Found in Translation, we are going to ignore ff.n. We still want this to be a rare fandom exchange; we're just changing the rarity rubric.

That's where you come in. If a fandom is truly rare, I probably won't have heard of it. (This goes double for anything non-Japanese, so speak up, you fans of manhua, manhwa etc.) If I haven't heard of it, I can't use google blogsearch to stalk its members find more people to join our exchange. So tell us what fandoms you'd like to see make the list next summer. Tell us where to find the original media, translations, fan translations, spin offs, and anything else a slavering fan should see.

Rules: we don't have any rules yet. Those are up to you too. Are you dying to see some rare pairings included here and not just rare fandoms? Let us know. Do you want to include some weird thing in Spanish or just your fandom that keeps getting knocked out of Yuletide? I don't promise to include your cinepuri-only PoT splinter fandom requests, but I'll consider anything. If you make me user icons, help me run FiT, give me good advice, or especially host a web page for me, I'll really consider anything. We are not above extortion and nepotism.

Come give me your opinions, and pass this community along to anyone who might be interested.

As I mentioned, I'm very in favor of rare pairings as well as rare fandoms. I mean, Prince of Tennis is just not rare, and nobody could argue that, say, Inui/Kaidou is rare, either. Inui/Yanagi, maybe. Marui/Jirou? Oshitari/Davide? Shinji/Ryouma? SHOW ME THE FIC PLZ. (Especially the first two, since I have actually seen some good RyoShin.) Likewise, GetBackers might not count as rare, and certain pairings like Ban/Ginji, Kazuki/Juubei, etc., are certainly not rare within the fandom, but Emishi/Amon? Masaki/Teshimine? Almost nobody but my girlfriend and I write them.

My impulse is to say that large fandoms like PoT should just have single-fandom rare pairing exchanges. On the other hand, people want what they want. I'd like to see what kind of critical mass we can get for this exchange and then see what people are interested in. (It would certainly be easier to find someone who's seen PoT than who's seen some obscure thing...) At the very least, feel free to post to this community extolling the virtues of your genuinely oddball fandoms. Maybe I'll go pick up a few new manga if nothing else. :-)

Yeah, I'd actually thought about running a PoT-specific exchange myself. (Was hoping they'd eventually tidy up the Yuletide matching scripts so I wouldn't have to come up with my own algorithm.)

Oh, also, might be able to help with webhosting; I've got a Dreamhost account, which makes setting up stuff pretty simple.

Also also, whatever the deal turns out to be with rare pairings in less rare fandoms, I've got plenty of genuinely oddball anime and manga fandoms as well. (Like, oh, Shinesman, where I personally had a hand in nearly every story every written for it, either in the writing or in the egging on of the writer, and if I'd dig out my old drafts and polish them up I could probably double the number of stories on the net.)

Yay! This is just one fine idea. A couple of years ago I have been obsessively translating fics from English to Russian and backwards, inspiried by some similar ideas.
My suggestion is this: there are rather old and popular fandoms, like Cowboy Bebop for instance, where you can't find a good fanfic, although there are billiards of pages written. Maybe we can try to gather good fanfics for rare-good-fanfic fandoms. =))
Anyway, I'm ready to go and help if I can.

Well, what I had in mind was a fanfic exchange involving requests and all new fics, but collecting obscure fics from better known fandoms isn't a bad idea either.

Well, requests are fine, but you can't request 'please, write an interesting, non-OOC fanfic' 8))

Well, that's certainly true, but all fic exchanges have that danger. I've had good luck with Yuletide, and I'm hopeful for this one.

Sorry. Had to tinker with my PC to get it operating again. Will move over here, then.

If you're still in the planning phase and decide to look upon yourself as a Yuletide spin-off and maintain their holiday theme, there's the calendar and holidays schedules. (The trouble with Japan is that they're all about spring, even the unofficial events like White Day and ohanami are in the spring.) On the plus paw, there is a big one are toward the end of summer, tanabata, which is crossed over in one form or another to other Asian countries.

Oh yeah. The other thing I keep forgetting. With non-winter things, the college/uni schedules also have to be taken into account. Too close to the tail end of summer and you smack into people going back to school; too close to the beginning and you get people running away from school.

Anyway. My coding skillz are nil, my LJ skillz are nonexistent, and my design skillz are no-way. (I think my only value would be as ornamental, like a plant, but even then more after a weed.) Thing is, I don't know that Yuletide wouldn't mind loaning out their code to interested parties, but you'd have to have someone who knew what to do with it.

I've asked about it a few times, and this last time Elyn said that it was never going to be particularly polished up, but they were probably willing to let it out the door as is... trouble is, I'm an (ex-, really) HTML geek, not a Perl geek, so I'm not sure I'm up to the task -- I'm better than I ought to be at mucking with other people's Perl code considering I can't write my own at all, but there are limits. If we could find someone who is a Perl geek, on the other hand...

All the local festivals are in the summer, but I know what you mean about the big ones. I wasn't really planning on making this coincide with an actual present-involving holiday, but who knows.

Heya! Saw your comment, came over to leave one of my own. Will make sure to promote this comm over on my LJ later on! (I've not got many readers but I may be able to interest a few new lurkers?) I'm still willing to help, although I'm not sure what kind of help I could be. Let me know what you need/want and I'll see what I can do? (Or learn, in order to be of some help.)

Hurrah! I'd like to see:

  • Mainichi Seiten! (Smart and funny bl manga about four brothers who are all gay (but not for each other). Scans at Pecatorre Sanctuary and summaries of later untranslated volumes by canis_m here and here.)
  • Any Mitsuru Adachi series.
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (does this count as rare, I wonder.)
  • Eternal Sabbath
  • Please Save My Earth -- big in its day, but old. Official English translations are still coming out!

XD I'm glad you reminded me of those, though, because when school started I kind of forgot.

Am agreed w/ the need for Mainichi Seiten! fic, although more than fic I really crave the next manga installment. *twitch*

Great suggestions. I've been meaning to read Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, actually. I have the first volume sitting around somewhere. I didn't even know what it was when I bought it. (And the same goes for Cantarella, though I did try to read that before getting stuck on all the kanji for religious things.)

This is an awesome idea, I don't have much in the way of compie skills, but you've got my support for what it's worth.

I saw Cantarella mention by a couple of people, that would be lovely to see in a fandom list. Any chance of anyone having heard of the One Thousand and One Nights manwha or Island?

This is an interesting idea. I just put together my own personal archive of stories from the "From Eroica With Love" manga series. There are close to 700 stories going back to 1989, one of which I know was origianlly written in Japanese. The manga has only just started being translated.(They're up to book 7 out of 33) But there are some really great fan translations out there of quite a few of the stories.

Hmmmm. Thinking back...

Count Cain
Eerie Queerie
Vampire Game
RG Veda

I know the last two are CLAMP, but there's still not all that much fic for them.

I'm in! (kikimorra's been making an effort to recruit me.)

Lessee... fandoms I'd like to see more of are Juuni Kokki, YES. Especially rare/alternate pairings, but I'll take anything! Same goes for Eyeshield 21.

Hmmm... looking at the above, it seems I can't contribute many really RARE fandoms, but the ones I do like are dominated by 2-3 characters or pairings and the rest is silence. So I'm voting for the rare pairings thing!

Oh, and I can contribute web space, and my spastic Photoshop skills as well. Just let me know!

Oh, and while it's on my mind, my obligatory tiny fandom plug: SHINESMAN! Parodies sentai shows and Japanese corporate life, all the characters are named after voice actors, and while the manga can be difficult to get ahold of and is mostly not translated, the anime has been licensed for years. (Alas, the anime's only 2 30-minute parts and the manga's 9 volumes, but at least it's something.)

Oh, this is a fabulous idea. Sadly, I think all my fandoms - Hikaru no Go (manga + anime), Azumanga Diaoh (manga + anime), and Princess Tutu (anime) are lot less rare than the other ones people are suggesting (though Hikaru no Go has about 150 readable stories, and about 900 archived at ff.net!), but - still. Cool idea. And if Hikaru no Go, Azumanga Diaoh, or Princess Tutu does end up on the list, I would so do this. (And I have links! For source! And I would happily do a pimping write-up for any of them!)

Umm - how about "Appleseed", "Ghost in the Shell" and "Lone Wolf and Cub" - I would really love some classic LW&C stories. (Not that the new series entirely sucked, either.)

Where would melds like Frank Miller's "Rohin" fit in?

Would the manga version of "Sandman" be an option? And how about "Samari Jack"?

(If these are so huge of fandoms that they wouldn't count, I would love pointers at communties/archives.)

Most of these are well-known but don't seem to have much fic:

I've never seen a Seraphic Feather fic. (It's a manga, available in official English translation but somehow rather unpopular despite nice art and plenty of fanservice gorgeous women.) I tried suggesting it at Yuletide but I guess there was no interest.

I'm getting into the new anime Pumpkin Scissors (based on a manga that doesn't seem to be even scanlated yet.) I'm dying to write fic for it, though a little reluctant as it isn't finished (nor is the manga).

Genshiken still seems to be suffering from a lack of fanfic, though if I'm wrong I hope someone will correct me.

Black Jack also doesn't seem to have anything much out there, though people are starting to talk about it.

Seconding the Shinesman recommendation.

I've only seen one Fancy Lala fanfic. I never finished watching it and for various reasons am afraid to write for it, but it's rare.

I'd also be interested in rare pairings within well-known fandoms, but I do understand that's hard to regulate.

A, A' is rare... in fact there are many many one-shot manga that are not written about.

Video Girl Ai has little fanfic.

;_; No one's mentioned any K-dramas yet. I'm currently on a "Goong" kick and I'm really disappointed that the fandom is so small. Well...not small in size as its following is quite substantial, but the amount of fanwork done for it is pretty limited and usually centers around the main couple in the drama. I like the main couple and all, but I'm more interested in the side-character pairings *points to user icon as an example* which are even rarer. ^^;;

I don't really have time to write up a summary for "Goong" but here's the Wikipedia article for you to peruse. Fansubs are pretty easy to find on Youtube. The quality of the subs is usually so-so but for the most part they're understandable, and it's better than nothing. You can also check out the LJ community, goong.

Awesome. This is just the kind of recommendation I'm looking for. I know nothing about K-dramas, but I'd love to see more fandom for something besides anime. Feel free to suggest other series and to advertise this community anywhere you like. I know it looks dead at the moment, but I'll be starting to post again soon.
